Photograph 5
Undervest and Seals of Helen Duncan

Throughout her life, controversy raged as to whether Helen Duncan's ectoplasmic materialisations were genuine or not. In a court case in Edinburgh in 1933, it was alleged that 'Peggy' was in fact a woman's undervest manipulated by Mrs Duncan. A vest was produced in evidence with the seals of witnesses who had attended the sťance attached.

The text on the tags (below) read, "Edinburgh 5th January, 1933. This is the Seal fixed by me of this date and said Seal has been and still is in my possession."
