Throughout her life, controversy raged as to
whether Helen Duncan's ectoplasmic materialisations were genuine or not.
In a court case in Edinburgh in 1933, it was alleged that 'Peggy' was in
fact a woman's undervest manipulated by Mrs Duncan. A vest was produced
in evidence with the seals of witnesses who had attended the séance
attached.
The text on the tags (below) read,
"Edinburgh 5th January, 1933. This is the Seal fixed by me of this date
and said Seal has been and still is in my possession."
